Rockville's Jenny Mears Earns More Honors
Just a couple of months removed from being named one of the state winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Trophy, Rockville High senior Jenny Mears learned on May 2 that she has been chosen as one of 25 winners of the 15th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of The Year" program. Mears was selected from a pool of more than 30,000 applicants.
The award, known as a "SAMMY" is based on five criteria: academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and the milk experience essay. Preliminary judging was conducted by a qualified group of educators and coaches who selected the 75 semifinalists, three from each of the 25 Milk Prize Regions. Finally, a panel of celebrity judges -- including Chauncey Billups, Jennie Finch, Tony Hawk, Andy Roddick and Dara Torres -- selected the final winners.
Mears, who plays soccer and runs track at RHS, will receive a $7,500 scholarship from Milk as well as a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. to attend the SAMMY 2012 weekend June 29-July 1. She is also eligible to be featured in a national congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a June edition of USA Today.
