Rockville High School Student Athlete of the Month: Megan McCollum

May 09, 2012

Name: Megan McCollum

Sport: Girls track

Nickname: Meg

Accomplishments: Made varsity since my freshman year as well as the All- Academic award; consistent honor roll; recently made states in high jump; Child development award sophomore year; Soccer

GPA: 90

How do you prepare for a game? I just relax and tell myself to have fun. I focus on my individual goals and keep them in mind during my races and practice.

Expectations for the season/Thoughts on the season: I qualified for states in the high jump this season on the second meet that I had ever jumped in. I didn’t expect it. I’m getting close to qualifying for the 800m race. This season, I’ve switched from the 400m to the 800m. I still compete in the 4 by 400m relay but my focus is on the 800m. I like it because I feel that I can excel in it. It is not impossible to make my goals. It just requires a lot of work.

Favorite Career Moment: It is difficult to choose my favorite race because there’s been so many. My favorite races are the ones in which I give everything I’ve got. It feels amazing to set and reach faster goals.

What area were you strongest in? What area did you improve the most in over your career? I started out my track career with very minimal endurance and now I am a long sprinter which requires a lot of it. I remember doing half times for the first time and running at a shuffling pace during the slower intervals. Now I am striding out those rest intervals and really sprinting out the fast ones.

Looking back, what are you going to miss the most about playing for Rockville? Overall, what are you going to miss the most about high school? I’m going to miss my team because we share so many similar experiences and we understand one another. They are very supportive and train with me every day. I’m going to miss being a member of a team that is like a family.

What is the toughest challenge you’ve overcome? Doing 350m workout every Thursday. It always makes me nervous. My freshman year, I learned about stress fractures. I kept running on it until it swelled up and I knew for sure that it was an injury and not just soreness.

Favorite athlete? I like the UConn women basketball team. They’re talented athletes.

Favorite band, movie, TV show? House, NCIS

What is your favorite sports website to follow? Don’t have one.

How do you believe sites like Twitter and Facebook have changed how you watch and follow sports? They haven’t.

Plans after high school: I plan to go to college. Physician’s assistant and dental hygienist are careers that interest me. I took allied health this year which really helped narrow down my career options. I’m interested in New England colleges such as the University of Maine and Tufts University.
