Fermi High School's April Student Athlete of the Month: Akshay Gangakhedkar
Sport: Tennis
Nickname: AK
Accomplishments: Athletic: I made states for tennis when I was a freshman. I also became the No. player for my team when I was a Junior. Academic: I have earned High Honors or Honors for every quarter in high school.
GPA: 3.5
Other sports: Basketball
How do you prepare for a game: I usually just stretch and warm up for a couple minutes with my teammates. Sometimes I’ll even listen to music which helps me focus mentally.
Thoughts on the season: I think this season is going to be a challenge but it will also be really fun. We have a lot of new players on the team and its going to be interesting to see how we work together as a team. We are playing many tough teams this season and I know that this team will be able to get some quality wins.
Toughest team to play against: The toughest team we will play against this year is Northwest Catholic. They have a very strong team with many talented players.
Favorite sports memory: My favorite sports memory is of me playing basketball at St. Martha’s. I remember hitting the game winner vs. St. Bernard’s in the championship game. This was very exciting and it will always be one of the best sports memories I ever have.
Favorite memory of high school: My favorite memory of high school was when my friends and I built a catapult for my Physics class. I had never done such a thing before and it became a really fun experience. I’m glad I got to spend it with my friends.
Role model or inspirational person in your life: My dad is really an inspirational person in my life. He is always there to help me if I ever need anything and I can talk to him about anything in life.
Most embarrassing moment: My most embarrassing moment in high school was when I finished a biology exam late. Everyone in the class was done about a half-hour ahead of me while I was still working. When I finally finished, the whole class clapped.
Toughest challenge I’ve overcome: The toughest challenge to overcome was back in sophomore year. I wasn’t doing too well in my classes and I really needed to do well in order to move onto junior year. I didn’t want to stay back and watch all my friends move on without me. So that year, I studied harder and I ended up doing well in all my classes and I moved on to being a junior.
Favorite athlete: My favorite athlete is Roger Federer. I have been watching his tennis matches for many years now and I continue to love how he plays the game.
Most famous (or near famous) person I ever met: I have met Tom Brady. He is my favorite football player and another role model for me in my life.
Person I’d like most to meet: I would like to meet Roger Federer. He is my favorite tennis player and I would like to be able to talk to him about tennis and how I can improve my game. It would probably be one of the best experiences of my life.
Favorite way to relax: My favorite way of relaxing is to just play some basketball with my friends or listen to some of my favorite music alone. Both of these help me relax and get my head straight. I will often do them to clear my mind of any troubles.
Favorite class: I mostly enjoy all my science classes such as biology and chemistry.
Favorite snack food: My favorite snack would have to be Cheez-Its or Oreos.
Favorite band: I don’t really have a favorite band but if I had to pick one that I like it would be Green Day.
Favorite restaurant: My favorite restaurant is Olive Garden.
Red Sox or Yankees: Red Sox all the way!
Favorite movie: My favorite movie would either have to be The Hangover or National Treasure.
Favorite television show: Well I have many favorite TV shows. A couple of my favorites are House M.D., Family Guy, SportsCenter, and Tosh.O.
Plans after high school: After high school, I plan to go to UConn for college. I still haven’t decided what I want to major in yet. After finishing my undergraduate studies, I want to attend medical school.
